About the company

Parallel Marketing Group is a US-based marketing agency that entered e-commerce with a brand-new product type: AI-generated personalized coloring books under the brand Crayon Cards. The client had no prior e-commerce experience - their background is purely in marketing.

Target segments

  • Personalized gifts for children
  • Therapeutic activity books for elderly users in occupational therapy settings

Objectives

  • Build a brand-new AI-powered e-commerce product from scratch, with zero existing infrastructure
  • Create a single-screen, mobile-first flow - from photo upload through coloring page preview to checkout - that hides all underlying complexity from the customer
  • Reach soft launch quickly to validate the concept with real users
  • Build a cover personalization tool and a curated cover library

Requirements

Must-have features

  • Native Shopify integration through the Printbox plugin
  • Simplified, low-barrier user journey - mobile-optimised editing with full process automation, from photo upload to print-ready file
  • Fully automated photo-to-coloring-page conversion
  • Cover personalization: a self-serve tool plus a ready-made cover library
  • Product-led flow: the customer selects a product configuration first, which determines how many photos are required
  • Print format consultation: guidance on specifications and print-ready file standards
  • Rapid iteration cadence: changes and new features delivered in days, not weeks

Non-technical requirements

  • Coordinated onboarding across multiple stakeholders - the client works with two external partners, e-commerce and production, requiring alignment across all three parties
  • Full guidance on print formats and production-ready file standards

Project timeline

    • Image swap feature delivered, outside the original scope
    • Shopify access granted, Getbox plugin configured
  3. Phase 3April 2026
    • End-to-end flow testing
    • Discount bug identified and resolved
    • Domain migration completed, soft launch with limited users
  4. Phase 4May 2026
    • Coloring flow refined - text positioning, cover and title page behaviour
    • Image enlargement feature approved for production
    • Evaluation of a new GPT model for future coloring quality uplift

Challenges and solutions

  1. 01

No Shopify instance at project start

The client was waiting on an external web designer - a dependency outside both parties' control.

SolutionFull product development and configuration completed on the Masterpiece AI by Printbox side in parallel, including the entire coloring book engine. Zero time lost once Shopify access was granted.

  2. 02

    Inverted page-count logic

Page count was initially tied to the number of uploaded photos. After testing the first version, the Parallel Marketing Group team had a clear intent: they wanted the opposite - product configuration first, then photo count.

SolutionBecause the architecture was built to be flexible and easily editable, this change was simple to implement without a full rebuild. The result: cleaner UX and higher conversion intent.

  3. 03

    Unplanned image swap feature

Not in the original scope - it became a hard requirement after client testing.

SolutionDelivered through rapid collaboration with the development team in a matter of a few days, without delaying the overall timeline.

  4. 04

Expanding the product line beyond MVP

The original scope covered AI coloring books based on customer photos. During the project we developed an additional product type - painting books designed for use with physical paints, requiring a different approach to image preparation without relying on original photos.

SolutionThe product line was extended mid-project without disrupting the main delivery timeline.

  5. 05

    Image enlargement validation

To ensure the best coloring experience, we needed to validate how photos scale within the coloring page format.

SolutionA focused proof of concept was completed in just 2-3 hours using an automated image enlargement tool. Results were validated directly with the client on the live store before full rollout.

Benefits and outcomes

  • A new product category - AI coloring books did not previously exist in the Masterpiece AI ecosystem. We built a category that did not exist, which is proof we can do the same for your idea.
  • Mobile-first UX, optimised from day one.
  • Full-service onboarding - a non-technical founder guided through the entire stack: e-commerce, print and AI.
  • Four months end to end, but our part was done in weeks, not months.
  • Delivered inside the agreed budget - including the image swap feature and the painting book line, both added after the original scope was set.

The Masterpiece AI side - full product development and configuration - was completed within the first month of the project. What followed was Shopify access, page design and marketing setup: all on the client's side, none of it ours to control. We delivered a ready, fully developed product in weeks, then stayed hands-on through testing and refinement while the client built out everything else around it.

That is the difference: we do not just hand over a build and disappear. We understand how much else has to happen on a client's side, and we take the development burden off their plate entirely, so they can focus on the rest.

In the client's words

Crayon Cards is proud to endorse Printbox as a trusted technology partner. When we brought them the challenge of using AI to transform photographs into coloring pages, what seemed straightforward quickly revealed its complexity - converting real images into clean, engaging line art that matched our creative vision required significant refinement and iteration.

Printbox met that challenge with diligence and craftsmanship. Their team worked closely with us to understand what “right” looked like for our product, and they delivered a solution that continues to improve as AI capabilities evolve. Their commitment to ongoing adaptation rather than a one-time build sets them apart as a long-term partner, not just a vendor.

We recommend Printbox without reservation to any business looking for a development partner that takes ownership of hard problems and delivers.
